Play music together... slowly. Are you interested in joining Traditional Music Sessions but not sure where to start? We meet the first Tuesday evening of each month for a folk session – playing traditional tunes and songs in a friendly and supportive atmosphere. We enjoy playing a range of tunes from the Irish, English and Scottish traditions, plus a few from further abroad. If you don’t play or sing, just come along and listen! There are a few things that make this 'slow session' a bit different from other sessions as well as just playing slower: 1. Bringing along sheet music/chord sheets/notes is completely fine - in fact we will aim to provide music and chords for the main repertoire of tunes. If you'd like to hear it and try and copy, that's fine too! Ideally, the eventual goal is to play tunes by heart. 2. We may play a tune through, discuss how to play it better and then give it another go - the idea is to practice and improve rather than rushing through! Listening to each other as we play is the new skill that we are learning. 3. The plan is that we nominate a couple of new tunes/songs each month so we know what to practice. We will try to draw from a growing repertoire of tunes and songs as we progress together and have access to this before the sessions so people can practice and learn ahead. The idea of the slow session is to create a monthly goal for ourselves to learn by heart and to enjoy tunes that grow gradually more familiar. Perhaps you have a favourite you would like to add? If you are a more experienced musician, you are welcome to join us too and experiment with playing harmonies and variations. Most tunes will be played at least three times through, with the basic tune the first time so that everyone knows what to join in with. Please spread the word and I hope to see you at the session!
