Nine Lessons & Carols

St Martin's Church, Jersey, Church Lane, La Rue de la Croix au Maitre, Jersey, Channel Islands

Details

As always, we can expect that a wealth of wonderful music will be sung in the Island at Christmas – and Cantabile in particular celebrates the season with an exceptional breadth of repertoire drawn from many centuries of the gloriously rich carol tradition of carols. The choir will sing at the service of Nine Lessons and Carols at St. Martin Parish Church on Sunday 8 December at 6pm. If you come along, you’ll be intrigued by the engaging variety of music to be performed, with the additional pleasure of joining with the choir in singing some of the best-loved seasonal hymns and carols. Among the choir carols selected this year are a sparkling modern arrangement of In dulci jubilo by Phillip Moore; traditional seasonal folksongs by Vaughan Williams and Philip Ledger; recently-composed carols by Sally Beamish and Lucy Walker and well-known choir carols by Peter Warlock and John Rutter. The earliest carol, Angelus ad Virginem, dates from the 13th-14th century - while the newest (There is no rose by up-and-coming young composer Lucy Walker) received its premiere only last year. Thanks to the support of the Rector and parish, Cantabile rehearses weekly in St. Martin’s church where we have sung other well-attended and much-appreciated services besides the annual Christmas carol service. The choir sang for the induction of the Rector, the Rev. Pete Stone, as well as performing regular Patronal Festival choral evensongs, and for weddings and the occasional concert. Do join us in our ‘home’ church, for this most joyous annual choral occasion! Mulled wine and mince pies will be served after the service.
