For centuries sailors have approached Jersey’s coastline in fear of its hundreds of rocks, sandbanks and other hazards, all waiting to wreck their ships. Fishers, on the other hand, appreciated these same hazards for the fish and shellfish that they harboured. Both needed to know the location of each rock and to help, they were given names. In times past, almost every rock had a name but few were written down and so this knowledge is being lost. This talk reveals initial findings from a fifteen-year project to document Jersey’s traditional coastal names. Over 2,000 have been traced and they have much to say on the Island’s historical and intangible cultural heritage. Free Entry. Tea and coffee will be served from 12.45pm.
