Turn of the tide: the triumphant 1779 defence of Jersey

St. Ouen's Parish Church Carpark La Ville de l'Eglise JE3 2LR St Ouen

Details

Local historian Ian Ronayne, who is also a Vice President of the Société Jersiaise, is offering a free walk commemorating dramatic events taking place in Jersey nearly 250 years ago. On 1 May 1779, a French invasion force attempted to land in St Ouen’s Bay, only to be thwarted on the shoreline by local forces. The walk, which takes place on Sunday 27 April 2025, will examine this important historic event in places it happened and remember the resolve of those who helped ensure the Island remains British to this day. While the Battle of Jersey in 1781 is well known to most, far fewer are aware that another French attempt to capture Jersey two years earlier also ended in defeat and desolation – this time in St Ouen’s Bay. Join historian and guide Ian Ronayne on this scenic ramble to recall the fascinating historic events and characters of 1 May 1779, that ultimately helped shape our modern Island. Includes visit to the dramatic Grantez headland with its enigmatic Société dolmen, and leafy La Mielle de Morville nature reserve. The walk details Length:Five miles / three hours. Grade:Challenging in places: involves paths over broken ground and descents / ascents on country paths. Sensible walking shoes and weather appropriate clothing advisable. Meeting place:St Ouen’s Church car park (disc parking available / No 9 bus stops outside nearby St Ouen’s Manor)
