Immediately prior to the Occupation Jersey's economy was heavily integrated into that of the UK. The Island relied on imports of food and many other goods from the UK and paid for those through exports of agricultural products and income from tourism. An immediate consequence of the Occupation was that links with the UK were cut. The Jersey economy needed to be radically reshaped so that the Island became largely self-sufficient. The people of Jersey suffered a significant reduction in living standards. Rationing was introduced, barter was commonplace and there was a thriving informal market.
