Creating Safer Spaces

Digital Jersey Hub Grenville Street #Ground Floor JE2 4UF Saint Helier

Details

Creating Safer Spaces Orchard is pleased to invite you to the next in its Conversations for Good series – an exploration of how we can create safer places for women within Jersey. We welcome Poppy Murray, women’s safety campaigner and sexual harassment prevention specialist from Guernsey, as she shares her experience launching and running SafetyNet Guernsey, the island’s first charity seeking to make nights out safer for everyone. She will be sharing the challenges and successes of her work, the impacts of inappropriate behaviours, including sexual assault, harassment, and spiking, and what we can do individually and collectively to create safer communities. Poppy will be joined by Kate Wright, CEO of Freeda, who is already working to explore the underlying causes of rising male distress and harmful behaviours rooted in gender inequality and societal expectations of masculinity. In her work towards gender equality, she will be discussing some of the barriers we need to break down to help men feel more included in the conversation, as part of the collective effort to reduce violence against women and girls. Bios: Poppy Murray Poppy spearheaded the internationally acclaimed BE LADS campaign, raising awareness of women’s safety walking alone and actively tackling violence against women and girls (“VAWG”) in her home of Guernsey. She was named Runner Up in the “Making Safer Spaces” category at the 2024 National Police Chiefs’ Council VAWG Recognition Event, was a 2024 and 2025 UN Women UK Delegate for the United Nations’ Commission on the Status of Women, and recipient of the 2025 Crimestoppers Guernsey Outstanding Achievement Award. She has delivered training to public, private, and charitable organisations in the Channel Islands, UK, and internationally, including the Chelsea FC Foundation, International Society for Crime Prevention Practitioners, Metropolitan Police Service, Tesco Mobile, WSP, and the Royal British Legion. In 2024, Poppy co-founded Transformative Culture Consultancy Global Ltd to provide CPD-certified sexual harassment prevention training, aligned to support employers with their new legal duty under the Worker Protection (Amendment of Equality Act 2010) Act 2023. Kate Wright Kate chaired the Violence Against Women and Girls Taskforce, before stepping into the role of CEO at Freeda, Jersey's only independent charity tackling domestic abuse through protective and preventative strategies and services. With a background in corporate HR and cultural change, she is also co-founder of The Diversity Network, a business networking group and consultancy firm working with employers to create more diverse, equitable and inclusive workplaces. In addition, Kate chairs the Jersey Community Relations Trust, a voluntary body working to eliminate discrimination and support inclusion and a sense of belonging for all islanders, and she is one of the founding members of the Mind the Gap community, which is seeking to close the gender pay gap in Jersey. In 2023, Kate won the DIFERA Leader of the Year award. Orchard is an award-winning PR-led communications agency, operating across the Channel Islands and beyond. We believe in communications as a force for good, and created the Conversations for Good series to give people a free platform for important messages to be heard and positive conversations to be started.
